CellSens Deconvolution

HAMBURG, Germany, Sept. 2, 2010 — Olympus Europa Holding GmbH’s cellSens deconvolution module employs a constrained iterative algorithm to remove out-of-focus blur in advanced life sciences imaging. This high-speed operation provides sharp images and near confocal quality, and corrects for spherical aberrations. Integrating seamlessly with the cellSens Dimensions software, it delivers high performance and quality.

Using a specialized and improved algorithm developed for the company, the module provides high-speed image restoration. Maximizing modern PC computing capabilities, it leverages multicore processor architectures to provide powerful deconvolution, sharpening even the blurriest images. Users obtain fast and comprehensive results, without the complex parameter adjustment steps required with other de-blurring algorithms.

The resulting high-quality image stacks can be visualized in three dimensions, using the VoxelViewer to display structures and ISO projections via a click of the mouse. This enables more in-depth analysis, and stereo adaptations of the image can be displayed. The online de-blur function enables users to visualize the deconvoluted images during live operation of the camera.

A broad range of image types can be deconvolved, including fluorescence, confocal and bright-field. With the additional ability to perform blind deconvolution, the software uses a theoretical point spread function (PSF), adapting it to the specific data. The PSF calculation can be saved and applied to subsequent operations. Images obtained from non-Olympus systems are also easily imported.

Designed to offer control and processing for microscope-based experimental systems, the cellSens Dimensions software provides advanced features and optional solution modules. Users can conduct complex and sophisticated experiments, from extended focal imaging to multiple image alignment and multiposition imaging. Live images can be transferred directly to the web using the netcam function, enabling rapid discussion with colleagues all over the world.

With the ability to control company and non-company hardware, precise time-lapse experiments can be conducted. The resulting time stacks can be put through kinetic and threshold-based object analysis. Once data has been obtained, the report composer uses Microsoft Word templates to generate user-defined reports that retrieve images and data directly from the cellSens database.
