SAN DIEGO, June 8, 2011 — The Cell Voyager (CV 1000) live-cell confocal imager, manufactured by Yokogawa and available in the US through BioImaging Solutions, is a compact benchtop spinning disk system that offers high precision and ease of use.

Its microlens-enhanced dual Nipkow disk scanning technology reduces phototoxicity and photobleaching, rendering it suitable for use in observing delicate biological processes in cells, tissues and organisms. The built-in stable environmental control, high-precision X-Y control and continuous focus capabilities enable multipoint cell monitoring over extended periods.

The imager features 25- and 50-μm pinhole sizes, yielding high-resolution confocality at high and low magnifications. It performs high-throughput observation of long- and short-term cellular processes in a fully automated fashion.

The system enables darkroom-free, high-precision, long-term multiposition 3-D imaging within a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment. The automated heated lens system is supplied with up to six objective lenses, ranging from 10× to 100× and including oil- and water-immersion and long-working-distance lenses. Sensitivity and speed are achieved using back-illuminated electron-multiplying CCD cameras with three solid-state lasers operating at 405, 488 and 561 nm, and a laser autofocus system.

The CV 1000 achieves temperature control (±0.1 °C) and drift-free image acquisition by multiposition temperature regulation and heat insulation. Together with the 5% CO2 and humidity control, cells stay healthy during observations from periods of days to weeks. Its high-speed X-Y and Z control allows high-throughput observation of cellular processes.

The multiformat sample holders make the system a versatile research tool for development biology, cancer biology, neuroscience, stem cell biology, toxicology and in vitro fertilization. The powerful software also makes it a useful tool for drug discovery.
