For Projection Displays
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 29 -- Bookham Inc., a provider of optical components, modules and subsystems, has launched its ColorLoc family of color wheels and optics, key components of projection display systems, that are currently going through customer qualification. They offer manufacturers of projection display systems significantly improved performance and economics compared to currently available technology.
ColorLoc color wheels feature improved color control and higher transmittance giving greater light output, hence brighter displays. Tighter thin-film tolerances reduce light-engine tuning times, lowering total manufacturing cost for these projection displays. The result is color purity closer to primary colors, less color saturation nd a brighter and purer color display.
ColorLoc filter wheels are manufactured using Bookham’s advanced energetic deposition process and custom automated assembly systems. Projection system manufacturers gain from lower costs, consistency of supply and product repeatability and reliable and consistent filter characteristics.

Color wheels can be used with the Texas Instruments digital light processor (DLP). The color wheel typically separates white light from the source lamp into red, blue and green primary colors. Newer applications may have four or more colors. This combination of color wheel, white light and DLP is used for both rear-projection televisions and front projectors.

"The demand for improved electronic display performance continues to increase as advanced optical technologies improve resolution and true colors," said Bruce Kuhlmann, Bookham's global director of sales, display products. "Bookham is taking its industry-leading thin-film filter coating technology and advanced robotic assembly production skills to create enhanced color wheels and optical products for this growing marketplace to satisfy the needs expressed by the designers of projection displays."
