For Bioinstrumentation and Bioimaging
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 25, 2008 -- Coherent Inc. said its newest Compass 561 laser delivers 50 mW at 561 nm, while still offering substantially lower noise than any other solid-state yellow laser currently available.
According to Coherent, this frequency doubled, diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser has a noise specification of 0.25 percent rms, from 10 Hz to 1 GHz, as well as excellent beam characteristics (M²<1.2 and beam-pointing stability <6 µrad/°C). In addition, Compass 561 utilizes PermAlign construction to achieve superior reliability and lifetime characteristics, and is backed by a 13-month warranty with unlimited operating hours.
These performance specifications, together with its compact size of 100 x 40 x 32.5 mm (3.94 x 1.57 x 1.28 in.), make the new Compass 561 an ideal laser for OEM bioinstrumentation applications, including flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and other types of bioimaging, Coherent said. In particular, the 561-nm output is optimum for exciting several key fluorophores, such as rhodamine series and Alexa Fluor dyes, where it provides better separation between excitation and fluorescence than 532 nm.
According to the company, the Compass 561-50 laser has the same form, fit and function as the previous generation of both the Compass 561-nm lasers and the Coherent Compass 532-nm series, allowing OEM customers to take immediate advantage of the higher power at 561 nm. Coherent has shipped more than 40,000 Compass lasers with demonstrated lifetimes greater than 20,000 hours.
