Concave Grating Spectrometers

TAMPA, Fla., March 15, 2011 — The Black-Comet-HR concave grating spectrometers manufactured by StellarNet are designed for high-resolution applications. Available for measurements in two ranges, UV (200 to 600 nm) and visible (380 to 750 nm), the instruments achieve resolving resolutions of 0.4 nm.

The 16-bit devices are plug-and-play USB 2.0-powered, shockproof and vibration-tolerant, have no moving parts, and include the SpectraWiz 32-bit spectrometer software and development kit. The software includes drivers and is customizable for operation on Windows. It accurately measures wavelength emissions, reflectance, transmission, absorption, concentrations and absolute intensities. It has built-in applications for spectroradiometry, spectrocolorimetry, ChemWiz chemistry laboratory concentration analysis and UV-level monitors.

The devices use a 40-mm-diameter holographic concave grating with aberration correction to provide good spectral imaging and to improve spectral shapes by reducing coma and astigmatism found in all other plane grating miniature spectrometer designs, according to the company.

The flat-field spectrograph architecture does not use mirrors, reducing stray light levels to 0.02% at 435 nm and 0.2% at 200 nm while providing uniform resolution across the entire spectral range. The proprietary and patented optical design with permanent alignment requires no calibration adjustments and provides high thermal stability without wavelength drift.

The detector is bolted in position, and military-grade epoxy holds the concave grating in place. A multiband filter is integrated into the spectrograph to provide order sorting and to prevent optical aliasing. The optical input is attached via a standard SMA-905 connector using single-strand fiber optic cable with typical silica core diameters of 400, 600 and 1000 µm.

Additional concave grating models cover the 190- to 850-nm and 200- to 1100-nm ranges in one instrument.
