Correlative Microscopy

FEI has announced a suite of solutions for correlative light and electron microscopy. They bring data from different imaging techniques together automatically in minutes, giving cell biologists the precise information they need. Scientists believe that correlating information from the cellular down to the molecular level will lead to discoveries that will improve their understanding and treatment of cancer, AIDS and Parkinson’s.

Electron microscopy offers resolution 1000 or more times better than light microscopy. Light microscopy offers a variety of techniques, such as fluorescent labeling, that can identify a single molecule or structure within a large, complex environment such as the interior of a living cell. Correlating the two techniques allows scientists to use light microscopy to find the target and electron microscopy to explore its form and function.

Features include Tecnai with iCorr, an integrated work flow in which the light microscope is incorporated into a transmission electron microscope column; CorrSight, a light microscope dedicated to the different steps of correlative experiments, enabling researchers to image live cell dynamics and quickly fix those cells for electron microscopy; and MAPS software, which allows correlation between the electron microscope image and an image from any other source through a simple alignment procedure.
