FAULT LOCATOR Terahertz Technologies Inc.'s VLF-275 visible fault locator is a handheld, battery-operated, stabilized fiber optic laser source that emits visible light at 650 nm. The single- and multimode device enables a user to identify the location of a break, microbend or other discontinuity in a fiber optic cable. Because the light emanates from such faults in the cable, operators can locate their positions even at short distances. The company says that these faults could not be detected by conventional means such as optical time-domain reflectometers. Featuring a universal 2.5-mm connector, 40-h battery life (9 V), and a standard external wall-mount power supply, the locator also can be used to identify a particular fiber in a cable.
