EDINBURGH, England, Sept. 2, 2010 — For cost-effective 3-D microfabrication of microstructures, Teem Photonics has announced its 3-D microfabrication module, the µFab3D, that produces polymer, protein, metal and other biomaterial microstructures.
Distributed in the UK and Ireland by Photonic Solutions, the device is a laser accessory using two-photon absorption from a 532-nm microchip laser to build micro-objects in polymer, proteins or noble metals with confocal microscopy resolution. These microscopic structures are produced as a result of a high-definition photochemical process initiated at the focal point of a laser, and voxel-size resolution is down to 200 nm.
The surface of these structures is automatically generated by the laser which is driven by 3-D scan files or CAD files (SolidWorks, AutoCad), made possible with the use of proprietary and patented picosecond compact laser technology that enables a process with a higher chemical efficiency than that achieved by femtosecond lasers, according to the company.
The µFab3D consists of a laser module, a sample module, 3-D microfabrication software, a starting kit and an inverted microscope. The software offers a powerful 2-D slicing method to provide faster and more efficient fabrication.
The compact 532-nm Nd:YAG microlaser is adapted to the microscope aperture and modulated with an acousto-optic modulator. Wavelengths of 1064 and 532 nm are available at up to a 40-kHz repetition rate and 0.5-ns pulse duration. The sample module offers piezoelectric nanopositioning capabilities of up to 100 µm. Optional larger displacement piezo modules are available with up to 300 × 300 × 300-µm displacement. The software can optimize the fabrication of complex shapes imported from standard 3-D CAD files.
