SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 17, 2013 — Coherent Inc.’s new Flare series of compact pulsed lasers provides an alternative to older gas lasers and first-generation solid-state lasers for life sciences and instrumentation applications.

The series has three available wavelengths: near-IR (1064 nm), green (532 nm) and UV (355 nm). The UV model is suitable for Maldi-Tof applications currently serviced by nitrogen lasers, as well as for many laser microdissection applications. At 355 nm, the laser delivers a TEM00 output mode of M2 <2 and a pulse energy of 30 mJ.

Flare’s shorter pulse width (<2 ns versus 4 ns for the N2 laser) provides improved time-of-flight resolution, and its higher pulse repetition frequency of 1 kHz (versus <100 Hz for the N2 laser) reduces data acquisition times by an order of magnitude.
