The newest member of the PhotoFluor II line of light sources for designed for quantitative fluorescence imaging, the PhotoFluor II NIR®, has been introduced by 89 North.

The PhotoFluor II NIR features an extended spectrum to supply light across the range between 360 nm to 800 nm from a DC-stabilized, selfaligning metal-halide lamp and spectrally matched liquid light guide. Infrared imaging minimizes the intrinsic autofluorescence of animal and plant tissue, effectively reducing background. Longer wavelengths also scatter less within tissue enabling imaging at focal planes deeper in the tissue.

A range of deep-red and near-infrared fluorescent probes are available, including Cy7®, IRDye 800®, AlexaFluor 750® and the NIR-emitting fluorescent protein, iRFP1. As a result whole animal imaging, tissue imaging and cellular imaging in highly autofluorescent cell types can be performed with much higher signal to noise. With high output to 800 nm, the PhotoFluor II NIR is the ideal light source for these infrared imaging applications.

The new software control interface allows operators to adjust the shutter with a mouse click, choose filter position or advance wheel, and easily change settings and rename wheel contents. It includes a power standby mode.

Liquid light coupling minimizes vibration at the microscope, and the liquid lightguide is designed to maximize output. The computer interface enables remote operation of the lamp, filter wheel and shutter.

With a 1600-h lifetime prealigned lamp and either extended UV transmission (PhotoFluor II) or extended NIR transmission (PhotoFluor II NIR), PhotoFluor products are suitable for a variety of applications.

Applications for the PhotoFluor II NIR include cyan fluorescent protein, green fluorescent protein, yellow fluorescent protein, mCherry, Texas Red, MitoTracker Red, FITC, TRITC, Di-4-ANNEPS, Fluo-4, Fura Red, Cy7, IRDye 800, AlexaFluor 750 and iRFP.
