Leica Microsystems GmbH has launched a new version of its research microscopy software LAS AF 3 (Leica Application Suite Advanced Fluorescence) for use in biomedical research including deep imaging of thicker tissue or interactive time lapse experiments.

Its user interface is optimized for fluorescence imaging, reducing stray light from the computer screen that disturbs light-sensitive experiments. The wizard-based interface guides users through data recording and evaluation. It provides full control over the microscope hardware while minimizing user interaction through intelligent automation; e.g., by opening and closing shutters according to the selected contrasting method.

Matching differential interference contrast prisms are moved into the light path when changing objectives; in fluorescence mode the prisms are automatically removed from the light path to obtain high image quality. All parameters can be reloaded and applied to future experiments.

Their modular structure enables the LAS AF 3 systems to be tailored to fit specific needs. A choice of hardware components — e.g., the water immersion microdispenser, high-precision stages and live-cell accessories — can be added for applications such as screening, ratio imaging, Förster resonance energy transfer, collocalization studies, superresolution and total internal fluorescence reflection microscopy, and electrophysiology.
