A fully automatic miniature modular fusion splicer has been unveiled by Aurora Optics. The MiniMod is 23 cu in. in volume and weighs 1 lb, rendering it suitable for use in difficult and hard-to-reach situations. The splicer is operated from a remote control unit, connected by a cable, enabling it to offload functions that do not need to be at the fiber location, including the display monitor, control keypad, microprocessor and power supply. Only the functions that affect the fibers directly – the imaging system, precision fiber positioners and high-voltage fusion arc – are kept in the splicer itself. The splicer provides full three-axis automatic alignment, automatic fiber placement, subpixel image processing, arc fusion control and splice loss estimation. It works in any orientation.
