Coherent Inc. has expanded its Genesis family of multiwatt visible solid-state lasers for life sciences with two models offering 2 and 4 W of output power at 514 nm.
Based on proprietary optically pumped semiconductor laser technology, the Genesis CX 514 is the first solid-state laser to provide multiple watts of continuous-wave output at this legacy wavelength, according to the company. Both models feature <0.1% output noise, TEM00 beam quality and full CDRH compliance, making them suitable for OEM and demanding stand-alone research applications.
The company says that the lasers are much smaller and 25 times more electrically efficient than their ion predecessors, and there is no requirement for cooling water. The laser head measures 281 × 156 × 85 mm, and the OEM power supply measures 299 × 208 × 97 mm. Expected lifetime is >20,000 h. The output power can be smoothly adjusted from 10% to 100% of the maximum value, with no effect on beam quality or beam pointing stability, which is <2 μrad/°C.
The 514-nm output makes them suited for fluorescence-based applications in life sciences and bioinstrumentation. They also are useful for pumping dye and solid-state gain media.
