MELVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 10, 2015 — Canon germanium immersion gratingCanon U.S.A. Inc. has developed a practical germanium immersion grating, which it said can be used to significantly reduce the size of IR spectrometers for astronomy and other applications.

The gratings feature 100-μm grooves at regular intervals. The technology could be deployed on satellites, facilitating increased efficiency in spectrographic IR observations for the detection of organic matter.
