NORTH ANDOVER, Mass., March 28, 2012 — L-com Inc. has added two passive Power over Ethernet (PoE) midspan products for Category 6 Gigabit Ethernet lines: a single- and a four-port model. The new items are IEEE 802.3af-compatible and are available either individually or in kits with 48-VDC power supplies at either 48 or 70 W.
PoE technology uses ordinary Ethernet cabling to carry power. The company’s BT-CAT6-P1 and BT-CAT6-P4 models use gigabit transformers on all four data pairs, in contrast to designs that use transformers for only two pairs. They feature die-cast aluminum housings with integral mounting feet for long-term installations. The metal housing helps reduce electromagnetic interference on the Ethernet lines, while also providing good grounding via a directly attached ground lug and terminal.
As the need for Ethernet connectivity grows, it becomes important to provide it for all corners of a building or campus, including places where there are no AC outlets nearby. The company says PoE is the best solution to this problem, and it provides options for Category 5, Category 5e and more options for Category 6 cabling.
