SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 7, 2009 – Rad-icon Imaging Corp., a division of Dalsa Corp., has released the Helios10 MD panel, the first product in the company’s new Helios camera family. With an active sensing area of 20 × 25 cm, the CMOS x-ray panel is a medical-grade cassette package with an integrated handle. It was designed to meet the requirements for a variety of medical imaging applications such as full-field digital mammography, general radiography, bone densitometry and other mobile digital radiography uses.

The panel builds on the tiled configuration of Rad-icon’s RadEye100 very large area CMOS image sensors to achieve its total active sensing area, while maintaining high image resolution with a pixel size of 96 µm. The active-pixel CMOS photodiode array at the core of the panel consists of more than 5 million pixels that convert light emitted by the integrated scintillator screen into an electrical signal.

The detector’s low-noise, 14-bit digital output produces crisp, sharp images, high sensitivity and a high dynamic range. The panel is packaged in a rugged custom-molded plastic housing with a slim cassette form factor. Designed with portable imaging applications in mind, the panel weighs less than 3 kg and can be positioned using just one hand. Other features include a state-of-the-art GigE interface that connects to a laptop or a PC via standard Ethernet or fiber optic cable, proprietary fiber optic technology that increases sensor lifetime and enhances detective quantum efficiency at energies of up to 160 kVp, and a low-power CMOS design that consumes <10 W.

The panel’s large active area enables capture of large diffraction angles, and the low readout noise enables imaging of faint diffraction spots. The larger-area panel enables medical radiologists to image proportionally larger subjects in a field where images cannot be reduced by optical coupling.
