The Santa Cruz, designed to boost the capacity and retrieval speed of hard disk drives, incorporates a CMOS read channel, microcontroller, customer ASIC and embedded DRAM. The device supports access speeds up to 500 Mb/s from a 0.25-µm CMOS device, features trellis coding to improve the bit error rate, and produces signal-to-noise ratio gains of 1.5 dB over uncoded extended partial response equalization channels.
