BRIDGEWATER, N.J., April 6, 2010 — Hamamatsu Corp. has unveiled an imaging-based plate reader, the FDSSµCELL, designed for drug discovery instrumentation, and compound screening and kinetic cell-based assay development applications, including ion channel and G-protein-coupled receptor research in the pharmaceutical, clinical research organization and biotech industries.

The device is optimized for fluorescent kinetic assays using calcium and membrane potential dyes such as Fluo 4 and fluoroamphetamine.

Dispensing is available in either a 96- or 384-well format with easily exchangeable heads. Agonist/antagonist assays can be performed in the same run, and the optional washing system reduces carryover and allows tips to be reused several times. Software enables users to quickly set assay parameters in a single protocol, which can later be transferred to an FDSS7000 for further screening.

Based on the FDSS (functional drug screening system) series, the µCELL uses the company’s high-sensitivity camera range that images the entire plate simultaneously to provide fast readout times of a few minutes.

The system is designed for fast and simple operation. Assay and compounds plates can be easily loaded, and the assay is ready to start.
