MIDDLETOWN, Conn., April 7, 2010 — Kaman Precision Products Measuring’s KD-2446 is a high-precision proximity sensor system that offers lead-free RoHS compliance in a cost-effective compact DIN rail mount package that is easy to install. It makes static and dynamic measurements of metal targets such as ferrous or stainless steel and aluminum.

With 10-kHz analog output and threshold-adjustable 3.3-kHz switched output, it provides a flexible solution for high-speed automated manufacturing and process control applications. CE and RoHS compliance makes the system suitable for OEM applications including displacement, vibration, sorting and event capture. It uses inductive eddy current technology that provides noncontact measurement and offers good performance with both ferrous and nonferrous targets.

The system consists of two subassemblies: the sensor with integral cable and the signal conditioning or electronics module. Input voltage is variable from 12 to 24 VDC, and gain is adjustable for up to 22-V output with 24-VDC input.

Switching hysteris is <1% on ferrous targets. The system operates on a traditional Colpitts oscillator circuit where the sensor acts as the resonating coil for the oscillator. The closeness of the target to the sensor face pulls the oscillator, changing its frequency and amplitude of modulation, and controlling a variable gain oscillator section with the electronic circuit.

The signal is half-wave-rectified and filtered to obtain an analog voltage proportional to the target position or displacement. The analog voltage output can be varied by adjustment of the gain. The input power is diode-protected and regulated to provide a clean low-noise signal, and the output is short-circuit current protected. The opto-isolated switched output enables interfacing to counters, timers and alarm circuits.

The system comes standard with one of two production sensor configurations – the 9C or the 5CM. Both of these rugged sensors are rated for continuous operation up to 204 °C.
