Laser Components GmbH says its double-heterostructure laser has achieved operation in pulsed mode in temperatures up to 60 °C, an increase of 40 °C over the previous record. The standard laser chip was not optimized for high-temperature operation but produced output powers of 80 mW in a 10-ns pulse at 25 °C at an emission wavelength near 5 µm. The company says removing the cooling requirements of lead salt lasers promises new applications in industry, research and process control.
