The AS1116 from austriamicrosystems AG is an ultrasmall multiplexed LED driver that uses a single 2.7- to 5.5-V power supply and requires a supply current of 0.6 mA during operation and of 200 nA in shutdown mode. The device can drive either eight seven-segment digits with 47 mA per digit or 64 individual LEDs with 5.5 mA per LED. It can detect any open or short circuit in the multiplexed 8 × 8 array, and a detailed error report can pinpoint the location of the problem.
