LED light sources designed to replace halogen fiber optic light systems are available from Firstsight Vision. The HLV series provides an alternative method of high-power light delivery to halogen light sources using fiber optic lightguides, which are often bulky and have a short bulb life. The company says the LED sources produce light outputs equivalent to halogen-based systems in a smaller housing and with lower heat output. With either an 8- or a 12-mm diameter, the unit can easily be attached to existing applications. Users can strobe the light and obtain full-intensity narrowband illumination in a range of colors, another improvement over halogen sources. The product has a lifetime of more than 30,000 h.
