New LED technology has been incorporated into Carl Zeiss MicroImaging Inc.’s Colibri illumination system, a light source for wide-field fluorescence microscopy that uses wavelength windows with less need to suppress unwanted peripheral wavelengths from a white-light arc lamp. The system uses up to four LEDs, each individually and instantly controlled by electrical current without mechanical switching devices such as the filter wheels or shutters required by traditional illumination systems. Various colored LEDs can be used in combination, enabling users to see multiple fluorochromes simultaneously and to rapidly capture sequential images of each one.
