Laser scanning microscope
WELWYN GARDEN CITY, UK, April 28, 2009 – Carl Zeiss Ltd. has introduced the LSM 700 laser scanning microscope for confocal microscopy applications. It uses proven modules from a variety of fluorescence and laser scanning microscope systems to offer flexibility in both application and system structure.

CarlZeiss_LSM700.jpgThe device may be combined with a number of upright and inverted microscope stands to deliver image analysis solutions with high sensitivity and with quality tailored to the requirements of each user. Its optical design guarantees high efficiency in the detection of even weak fluorescence signals.

Key elements of the optical system include the beam path design with its maximum optical precision, the beam combiner system for accurate beam coupling and superimposition, the beamsplitter with continuous and loss-free splitting of the light spectrum, and a stable motorized master pinhole.

The scanning module has one or two reflection/fluorescence detection channels, each with sensitive photomultiplier tube detectors, accommodating lasers at 405, 445, 488, 555 and 639 nm. The scanners are two independent galvanometer mirrors with an ultrashort line and frame flyback. Scan resolution is from 4 × 1 to 2048 × 2048 pixels. The system scans at up to 5 fps with 512 × 512-pixel resolution. Scan zoom is 0.5× to 40×, digitally variable in increments of 0.1. Users can select 8-, 12- and 16-bit data depth. The system is supplied with Ethernet connectivity.

The microscope is suited to both individual workstations and user groups. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for use in space-restricted environments. Its integration with the proprietary Zen 2009 software makes it simple to use, and the intuitive design facilitates its use by first-time operators. The software allows users to set up complex methodologies quickly, and it displays a clear overview of the experiment at all times.
