Twin-scanner multiphoton microscope
WELWYN GARDEN CITY, UK, April 21, 2009 – Carl Zeiss Ltd. has addressed the challenges of imaging deep inside living tissues with the launch of the LSM 7 MP, a twin-scanner multiphoton microscope for imaging of live cells and whole animals.

The compact laser scanning microscope incorporates two scanners, meaning that the system’s two excitation lasers can be set to different wavelengths and used either simultaneously or sequentially for specimen imaging and manipulation.

CarlZeiss-LSM_7_MP.jpgWith the scan module optimized for excitation light up to 1100 nm, efficient fluorescence excitation can be produced deep inside tissue samples without the phototoxic damage associated with high-intensity light. Sensitive nondescanned detectors or a nondescanned GaAsP detector with signal outcoupling directly above the objective lens ensure vivid, high-resolution fluorescence imaging.

Applications include 3-D imaging in long-term observations of developmental processes and functional imaging in conjunction with simultaneous photomanipulation. In combination with the Axio Examiner upright microscope stand and the AxioCam camera, the LSM 7 MP is an optimal system for performing specialized multiphoton microscopy. A wide range of detectors, filters and other accessories allows users to configure a customized and application-specific system. Quick set-up and ease of use are guaranteed by the intuitive Zen imaging and control software.

Conventional confocal microscopes lose their capacity to resolve fluorescent structures in thicker specimens because of the absorption and scattering of both the excitation and the emitted light. With this instrument, fluorescence is only excited if at least two photons are absorbed by a fluorochrome molecule within less than 1 fs, and the whole of the emitted light signal can be used for imaging.
