Ophir StarBrightOphir Photonics (part of Newport Corp.) has announced a handheld power and energy meter for use with its thermal, pyroelectric and photodiode laser sensors.

StarBright measures power from pico- to kilowatts, and single-shot and repetitive energy from picojoules to hundreds of joules, as well as frequency and beam size. It also measures irradiance and dosage for the new PD300RM radiometer sensors, and when used with the company's BeamTrack power, position and size sensors, the meter can also monitor laser beam size and track beam position to fractions of a millimeter.

A bright 320 × 240-pixel color display gives users a choice of display formats: digital with bar graph or analog needle. Measurements can be averaged over selected periods of time, which is especially useful for unstable lasers.

The meter works with StarLab laser measurement software and StarCom data-logging software. A LabView driver and component object model interface allow developers to integrate laser beam measurements into programming environments such as LabView, Visual Basic and MatLab.
