Coherent Inc. has expanded its ultrafast laser amplifier family with the addition of the Libra-HE+, a one-box, single-stage device.

In combination with optical parametric amplifiers such as the proprietary OperA Solo, it serves as a compact tunable source for solid-state research and photochemistry and biology studies.

The amplifier delivers pulse energy >5 mJ at a 1-kHz repetition rate with a choice of <40-fs or 100-fs pulse widths.

The geometry of the titanium:sapphire gain crystal in the Libra-HE+ enables water-only cooling, which simplifies operation in comparison with thermoelectric or cryogenic cooling of the crystal. The device has a single regenerative amplifier stage, minimizing size while permitting beam quality of M2 <1.3 and energy stability of <0.5% rms.

The company says that the Libra-HE+ is suitable as a shared resource in a multiuser facility.
