Light Grids

Pepperl+Fuchs has introduced its LGS Series light grids featuring a slim IP67 enclosure housing with the control unit integrated into the receiver module, uncomplicated plug-and-play mounting, and software- and PC-free programming. The sensors are easy to install, commission and operate for warehousing, materials handling, packaging and general automation applications. Functions such as object identification and height monitoring simplify automation tasks.

They provide fast object detection, even when beam crossover is enabled, and the option of not only detecting objects but also identifying them and remotely communicating data via an input/output-link interface. If one or two beams are permanently obstructed, they can be ignored with the beam blanking function. At startup the signal strength is automatically adjusted and optimized for the environmental conditions, making switching more reliable and enabling faster response times.

Applications include monitoring an area for falling objects, ejection control, detection of parts as small as 4 mm, overhang detection, height monitoring, and object and hole profiling.

Three separate height switching outputs control object height or tension checks and enable the LGS to detect or report three height profiles. Using flexible teach-in options, the light grids can identify objects via their geometry, including objects with gaps and openings, in a moving or fixed position.

The light grids are available in customizable lengths from 100 to 3200 mm and resolutions from 8 to 100 mm. They operate in temperatures as low as −30° C. Response time varies from 2 to 20 ms, depending upon the number of beams (4 to 253) in the light grid.
