The cascaded design includes few segments, each with a higher refractive index of 1.47, 1.48 or 1.49. The cascaded structure enables gradual dissipation of the cladding power, the lowering of hot spot temperature and the increasing of overall reliability.

The lower modulus is helpful in very high power strippers since the lower modulus reduces stress in thermal cycling.
