Long-Life Fiber-Pigtailed Lasers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 6, 2012 — Coherent Inc. has expanded its OBIS family of plug-and-play smart laser modules with a new fiber-pigtailed option at wavelengths of 405, 488 and 640 nm.
The devices are offered with 1 m of single-mode, polarization-preserving fiber, terminating in a standard FC/APC connector and simplifying integration into OEM instruments. Besides the inherent ease-of-use advantages of this compact, self-contained laser platform, the lasers offer low noise and can be directly modulated.
Their low noise and high output stability are the result of an output beam with low drift to maintain efficient coupling and the use of a telecom-type architecture and methods such as laser welding to yield drift-free optomechanical coupling.
The modules deliver longer lifetimes because they successfully address the main cause of failure in lasers coupled to single-mode fibers, which is facet damage caused by the high power density at the fiber facets. They use a proprietary design that produces a four-times-longer lifetime than conventional fiber designs, which is important for shorter wavelengths such as 405 nm.
Applications span the life sciences, metrology and inspection, where fiber delivery is commonly used for miniaturization. Specific examples in life sciences include several fluorescence-based techniques such as flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and array readers for drug discovery. The wavelength scalability of the OBIS platform enables optimum excitation of target fluorophores.
