STURBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 21, 2012 — Photonis USA Inc. has announced a new long-life, low-noise (L3N) performance option for its microchannel plate (MCP) product line. The company says that the L3N option offers up to a 100-fold reduction in background noise when compared with traditional MCPs.

The low-noise option is suitable for applications where the background noise is currently lower than the detector noise. Recent tests confirmed that, at 0.01 counts per second per cm2, the L3N MCP dark count level approaches the background level of cosmic rays. Other applications include low-level imaging and high-energy physics research.

The L3N option is also being made available on any of the company’s products that contain MCPs, including specialty Stripline MCPs and time-of-flight detectors.
