BOZEMAN, Mont., Jan. 4, 2011 — Low-noise control electronics minimize linewidth, spectral drift and center wavelength jitter. The QCL Series of ultrastable low-noise quantum cascade laser (QCL) drivers manufactured by Wavelength Electronics includes the QCL1000 1-A driver that offers 0.7 µA rms noise over a 100-kHz bandwidth.

Designed as an OEM controller, it can be used in field-deployed systems or on a benchtop. It can be interfaced to a printed circuit board or via cables. Bandwidth is 2 to 3 MHz, with rise and fall times of 250 and 200 ns, respectively.

Features include compliance voltage of up to 16 V, constant current mode, onboard setpoint and limit controls, and dual supply operation at ±24 V. Patented circuitry is suitable for driving quantum cascade lasers where electronic noise, coupled through the laser, affects sensor measurements. The onboard current setpoint trimpot allows a DC bias to be set, and its signal combines with a remote analog input signal that can be negative or positive. Current range can be adjusted from 100 mA up to 2 A.

The drivers are used for improving the performance of chemical sensors in biomedical, imaging, spectroscopy, remote sensing, military, communications, aerospace and materials processing applications.

The QCL Series drives up to 2 A of low-noise current with core safety features including current limit, slow start, brownout/reverse voltage/overvoltage protection, and remote or local current enable.
