VICTOR, N.Y., Jan. 18, 2011 — New Scale Technologies Inc. has announced the latest product in its M3 Micro-Mechatronics Module family: the miniature M3-L closed-loop linear motion module. With 0.5-µm position resolution and measuring <27.5 × 13 × 7.5 mm, the system is suitable for precision motion control of variable inductors, trimming capacitors and optical elements for radio frequency, microwave and photonics tuning applications.
It also adds reliable motion to a wide range of miniature optical and handheld instruments, aerospace and unmanned aerial vehicle controls, and biomedical systems including fluid controls and microsurgery.
Operating on a 3.3-V battery and high-level digital motion commands, the system integrates all motion and control functions into one package, including a piezoelectric linear micromotor, a position sensor, a guide mechanism, a motor driver, a control processor and software. The standard serial interface (I2C or SPI) accepts proportional integral derivative closed-loop system tuning parameters, as well as high-level input commands such as “move specified distance.” No external controller is needed.
The module is offered with a bullet nose for pushing or a hook tip for pulling loads. Typical travel range is 6 mm. It draws ~500 mW of power while moving and 200 mW quiescent. Weight is ~4.5 g without tips. It is customized to OEM specifications.
M3-L developer’s kits include an M3-L linear module along with a USB key and the company’s Pathway PC software, affording designers a graphical user interface to evaluate motion and a scripting environment for system development.
