PerkinElmer Instruments' Ortec Products has designed the X-Cooler as a low-cost mechanical replacement for the liquid-nitrogen cooling of high-purity germanium detectors. It is suitable for gamma spectroscopy applications in analytical laboratories as well as for environmental and process monitoring. The X-Cooler is available with the company's new detectors and is compatible with existing Ortec PopTop detectors. The cooler, which requires less than 300 W of power and features a compact lightweight design, is priced comparably with liquid-nitrogen Dewar vessels and cryostats.
