The MESA 50 energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analyzer from Horiba Scientific screens samples containing hazardous elements such as lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury and bromine for RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), and chlorine for halogen-free arsenic and antimony applications.

The device includes three analysis diameters from thin cables and electronic parts to bulk samples. It features a silicon-drift detector for fast measurement times and increased sensitivity, and a digital pulse processor. The portable device has a footprint of <1 ft3 and a weight of ~26 lb, and it features several interlock devices and a metal cover to eliminate x-ray leakage.

Its liquid nitrogen-free operation does not require vacuum pumps, and the device can be connected to a PC via USB. It also offers multilanguage user interface, including English, Japanese and Chinese, as well as an Excel data-management tool for report generation.
