MICI Piezo Actuators

JENA, Germany, April 22, 2011 — Piezosystem Jena is offering the MICI series piezo actuators for fine adjustment in conjunction with manual course positioning stages. MICIs are often used in combination with micrometer screws and provide nanometer-scale fine adjustment on top and an electronic position control. Until now, the maximum travel range available from MICI piezo positioners was 180 µm.
The company is expanding the series with the MICI 200/MICI 200 SG. The travel range has been extended to 240 µm in open-loop mode with no compromise in rigidity or dynamic behavior. The MICI 200 SG version is equipped with a precise strain gauge feedback sensor to enable closed-loop operation with a travel range of up to 200 µm.
The closed-loop mode compensates for the effect of drift/creep and hysteresis, which are known to be inherent characteristics of piezo-driven systems. The actuators deliver position repeatability of better than 10 nm and high stability.
MICI 200 is easily mounted by clamping as an adapter between the mechanical stage and micrometer screw drive, similar to MICI 80. Micrometer screws of 9-mm-diameter (length of mounting is 14 mm) can easily be fastened.
The actuators are used in scanning applications in biotechnology when combined with manual sample stages for analysis of cells.
Proprietary series EVD and 30DV50 digital controllers are recommended because they can generate trigger signals dependent upon the traveled distance.
