RICHARDSON, Texas, Nov. 4, 2010 — For installation and maintenance of today’s optical networks, Anritsu Co. has introduced the MT9090A Network Master micro optical time domain reflectometer (µOTDR). It provides the high performance, ease of use and portability required by field personnel responsible for the installation and maintenance of optical fibers.

The compact handheld device features 5-cm resolution for accurate mapping of events. With less than 1-m dead zones, it can conduct fast and accurate evaluations of central offices, FTTx cables and intrabuilding cables.

In addition to traditional premise/access applications, it expands the areas in which handheld OTDRs can be used. Featuring a dynamic range of 37 dB, it provides great detail and high resolution when measuring metro links, and conducts complete evaluation of long-haul fibers up to 175 km. Its capabilities make it a single instrument solution for evaluating fibers in any network, including premise, access, metro, core, as well as passive optical network-based FTTx networks featuring up to a 1 × 64 split.

The µOTDR’s full auto mode simplifies operation for users and ensures proper set up. It also features an integrated launch fiber that provides accurate initial connector measurements without the need to connect external calibration devices.

The instrument can easily fit in the palm of a user’s hand, measuring 19 × 9.6 × 4.8 cm and weighing only 700 g. With its lightweight design and user friendly size, it is suitable for the outside plant environment because it can be operated with one hand.

Two battery options are available: long-lasting NiMH batteries and alkaline ones, in case recharging is not an option. The MT9090A also features a 109.2-mm-wide, high-resolution, full color screen for viewing OTDR results in both indoor and outdoor settings.
