FREDERICK, Colo., June 27, 2013 — Meadowlark Optics Inc.’s liquid crystal technology for polarization control now extends into the midwave infrared (MWIR), enabling its standard line of polarization controllers to be used for its variable retarders.
The liquid crystal-based retarder allows manipulation of polarization states without moving parts in the 3.6- to 5.7-μm region, providing λ/2 retardance (or greater) up to 5.7 μm.
Substrate material is antireflection coated germanium. Reflectance is ≤5% per external surface, operating temperature range is 0 to 50° C and response time is ≤0.5 s. The device is computer-controllable and suitable for variable attenuation. Custom configurations can provide up to λ/1 retardance at 4 μm, or λ/0.7 at 5.7 μm.
