LED light sources are the future of microscopy illumination, and provide vast experimental, practical, and environmental benefits over traditional mercury and metal halide lamps. To all users of fluorescence microscopy, achieving bright images with a high signal-to-noise ratio is crucial, and there are many factors involved — including the camera, light source, fluorophore, and filters.
While technology has greatly advanced the first three factors, many standard filter sets are not optimised for LED peaks, which can lead to sub-optimal experimental conditions, low quality images, and inaccurate results. In a bid to bring optical filters into the new LED era and equip end-users with greater insight into their samples, CoolLED designed a set of filters perfectly matched to the spectra of CoolLED LEDs and common fluorophores, right across the spectrum. For example, new excitation bandwidths now harvest maximum power from LED peaks, and emission filters reduce bleed-through during multi-colour imaging. Single band filters for DAPI, GFP, mCherry, and Cy5 are now available through local microscope distributors.
