Memory LCDs

HAMBURG, Germany, May 19, 2010 — Sharp Microelectronics Europe is expanding its line of low-power memory LCDs with two 68.6-mm (LS027B4DN01, LS027B4DH01) displays with resolution of 400 × 240 pixels and a 74.7-mm (LS029B4DN01) model with 456 × 240-pixel resolution.

Through an integrated image memory, the LCDs require only about 1% of the power of conventional thin-film-transistor LCDs and are suited for low-power use.

They are based on proprietary Continuous Grain Silicon technology that enables equipment of each pixel with 1-bit memory that stores the image information uploaded onto the screen. Image information must be rewritten only in those pixels in which the content has changed compared to the previous picture frame. As reflective displays, memory LCDs do not require backlighting.

They consume only 0.8% of the power that conventional displays of the same size do. A 34.3-mm memory LCD uses 15 µW in operation, whereas a standard LCD of comparable size requires around 2 mW to display an image. The 152.9-mm model requires only 3.5 mW at a frame frequency of 1 Hz.

The memory LCDs do not require polarizers. Thanks to a polymer network liquid crystal material, the image is generated by the status of the pixel changing from transparent to white with a reflectivity of 50%, giving the display a silver-metallic appearance that is suited to fashion applications.

Small solar cells can supply sufficient electricity to run the memory LCDs, making them suitable for use in portable applications such as e-books, wristwatches, shelf labeling, heart rate monitors and other fitness devices.
