PLYMOUTH, England, Oct. 17, 2018 — Tailored Backplane for Monolithic MicroLED DisplaysPlessey Semiconductors Ltd. and Jasper Display Corp. have announced a tailored backplane for monolithic microLED displays.

Jasper Display’s eSP70 silicon backplane is tailored for the needs of microLED devices. The full-color-capable active matrix backplane features a resolution of 1920 × 1080, a pixel pitch of 8 µm, and high current uniformity via a proprietary current source pixel and flexible addressing. Making displays brighter for today’s portable augmented and virtual reality battery-powered devices is increasingly challenging. Using existing technologies that require high power output is a serious design limitation as the compact devices have limited space to house on-board power sources.

By using Jasper Display’s eSP70 backplane, Plessey is given the flexibility to utilize its GaN-on-Si platform for microLEDs, delivering high brightness with moderate power consumption or usable brightness with low power.
