SAN JOSE, Calif., June 6, 2019 —
Monolithic, gallium-nitride-on-silicon microLED bonded displays in full HD have been announced by Plessey Semiconductors Ltd.
The display features an array of 1920×1080 current-driven monochrome pixels on a pitch of 8 μm. Each display requires more than two million individual electrical bonds to connect the microLED pixels to the controlling backplane, which provides independent, 10-bit, single-color control of each pixel. Bonding a complete LED wafer to a CMOS backplane wafer incorporates more than 100 million micro-level bonds between the wafers.
Applications include next-generation augmented and mixed reality display products, head-up/head-mounted displays, smartphones, and other microLED-based applications.
