Multicamera Inspection System

Olmec Ltd. has developed a multicamera, multi-illumination, high-speed inspection system to check the integrity of the foil seal on plastic lids that are used to seal glass and plastic containers in the food, health care and pharmaceutical industries. The foil provides an airtight seal to protect against contamination, humidity, tampering and leakage to maintain product freshness and increase shelf life. This type of lid and seal is used on milk bottles, and on ketchup, powdered drink and tablet containers.

The foil is inspected to make sure that there are no blisters, dents or creases and that it has not lifted from the rim before the lid is sent to the induction-heated container sealing station.

The lids are produced with the foil sealed in, ready for subsequent sealing to the container. Damage to the foil can occur during transit.

To capture all of the defects, the foil must be illuminated from various directions and imaged by three cameras positioned at different angles to the foil. The lighting runs in a sequence of three illumination combinations for each camera, producing nine images for each lid inspected. Full-frame images are captured using Genie HM 1400 cameras from Teledyne Dalsa, which capture images for analysis in 48 ms for high-volume inspection.

The system can be integrated into a production line environment with an air knife mechanism used to fire rejected lids from the line. It features a proprietary modular user interface for Windows, which provides multilevel security, allows easy review of images from failed components and can be set up for remote diagnostics.
