NIR Streak Camera

Hamamatsu Photonics UK Ltd. has unveiled a streak camera with sensitivity in the near-infrared region up to 1650 nm, which the company says is many orders of magnitude higher than previously available.

The C11293 simultaneously records intensity versus time versus position (or wavelength) with high temporal resolution. Until now, the only photocathode material available for streak measurements at >1000 nm had been the S-1 material, which features excellent temporal resolution of better than 1 ps but suffers from low quantum efficiencies at longer wavelengths.

The new streak photocathode is made of InP/InGaAs and has a sensitivity several orders of magnitude higher than that of S-1. It also extends its range up to 1650 nm, where S-1 is unsuitable.

To suppress dark current and make the device suitable for low-light-level applications, the photocathode operates at approximately −100 °C by means of liquid nitrogen cooling.

The time resolution of the C11293 is better than 20 ps full width half maximum. It can run at arbitrary repetition rates up to a maximum of 20 MHz, making it versatile and easy to combine with many experimental setups.

Applications include time-resolved spectroscopy in semiconductor physics, quantum dots, carbon nanotubes and other nanostructure research, photovoltaic research and photonic crystals.
