LI-Cor Biosciences has introduced its portable Pearl system for imaging small animals and whole organs. It features a CCD-based optical system designed for in vivo imaging in the NIR, where tissue autofluorescence and light scattering are low. Its filtering design significantly reduces noise, and signal detection is optimized for the IRDye NIR dyes. The system’s laser illumination enables deeper penetration of tissue than white light does, allowing smaller targets to be visualized at greater depths. Less than 30 s is needed for capturing white light and for NIR imaging at 700 and 800 nm. Dual-channel detection is possible in a single image acquisition.
