Basler AG has added features to its scout and pilot families of cameras to make them easier to integrate into the production line and to improve image quality. The 40 scout models and 10 pilot cameras are compact, rugged and suitable for use in industrial applications such as in-line product inspection.

Added features include binning, gamma correction and a debouncer function. Binning improves the signal-to-noise response of the camera by adding the signals of neighbouring pixels. A high-performance field-programmable gate array performs the horizontal binning, while analog charge transfer performs the vertical. Up to four pixels are involved in both of these directions.

Gamma correction renders the intensity response of the sensor similar to that of the human eye, compressing the sensitivity to very bright light and revealing more detail in low-light areas of the image. This is useful in applications where staff must monitor and analyse images by eye. The debouncer eliminates ghost triggering in industrial applications and discriminates between a valid and an invalid signal on the camera’s digital inputs. It ignores noise and responds only when the signal persists for a preset time. The user can adjust the time to tune it appropriately for the particular signal source.

The pilot series cameras produce resolutions ranging from 648 × 488 to 2448 × 2050 pixels, and the scout series’ resolutions range from 659 × 490 to 1628 × 1236 pixels. Both series have Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.
