New Filters Enable Compact, Lower Cost Fluorometer

Delta Optical Thin Film FiltersDelta Optical Thin Film has introduced new advanced excitation and emission bandpass optical filters for fluorescence spectroscopy/microscopy that enable more compact and lower cost fluorometers to be built.

Traditionally, a fluorometer requires three optical filters – an excitation filter, a dichroic beamsplitter and an emission filter – in order to block out-of-band emission efficiently. However, with the new bandpass filters from Delta Optical Thin Film with typical pass band transmission of more than 95% and very high out-of-band blocking of OD6, the dichroic filter can be omitted in many designs. The blocking wavelength range extends over the complete sensitivity range of silicon-based sensors.

The cost-efficient mass production of these new high-performance bandpass filters has been made possible through our new Bühler Leybold Optics Helios 800 magnetron sputtering machine. This machine offers a unique combination of large batch sizes and low production time allowing these advanced optical filters to be manufactured in volume at very competitive prices.

Besides the bandpass filters, Delta Optical Thin Film is well known for our industry leading continuously variable filters, also known as linear variable filters. These filters are either edge or bandpass filters that vary along the long axis of the filter substrate. Due to the very small and well-controlled filter edge and high out-of-band suppression, our linear variable filters have been adopted as the preferred option by many compact spectrometer manufacturers.

Another exciting application of our continuously variable filters is tunable light sources. By combining a broadband light source with our variable filters, tunable monochromatic light sources in the 300- to 1000-nm wavelength range can be built.
