SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 25, 2013 — BaySpec Inc. and UTC Aerospace Systems have collaborated to deliver an optical coherence tomography (OCT) spectral engine with high resolution, a compact size and high optical throughput.

BaySpec’s DeepView spectrograph, together with UTC Aerospace Systems’ Sensors Unlimited GL2048L-10 InGaAs line-scan camera, delivers 2048 pixels with a 10-μm pixel size at 76,000 lines per second, while the volume phase grating-based spectrograph enhances throughput and sensitivity. The pixel size offers double the penetration into patient sample tissue due to reduced scattering in the longer wavelengths of the short-wavelength infrared (SWIR), revealing valuable diagnostic information to physicians.

The camera is suitable for high-resolution OCT systems for the SWIR range. The increased number of pixels and 10-µm pitch in an ophthalmological application doubles the imaging distance in the eye at 1.05 µm over previous systems, capturing features from the top of the retina through its blood vessel layer (the choroid) with high axial resolution. The camera speed enables capturing both the macula and optical nerve head in sufficient detail to assist in the diagnosis of glaucoma and macular degeneration at an early stage. Working at 1.31 when imaging the whole front of the eye, the system captures the top of the cornea, through the anterior chamber to below the iris, in one recording.

Features include fast f/2 optics. Custom center and total wavelength range can be requested, and BaySpec provides calibration and factory alignment.
