The OEM Optical Switch from Brimrose Corp. of America is capable of switching an optical path in <30 ns.

The technology is based on an acousto-optic modulator with no mechanical moving parts that is immune to vibration, hermetically sealed and suitable for rugged environmental installation. The optical switches offer low-insertion loses and low-power consumption and can handle optical power up to 1 W. The bi-directional switches can operate in either 2 × 1 or 1 × 2 configurations and are designed for single-mode or polarization maintaining optical fibers with customer-specified connector types.

The switches are suitable for telecommunications applications including optical add/drop multiplexing and cross- connect deployments, as well as fiber optic sensing applications.
