Single-mode optical fiber with near-circular symmetry is available from IVG Fiber. Called SmartSpun, it allows optimization of Faraday- and Kerr-effect-based devices -- such as current and voltage fiber sensors -- and fiber optic gyros, where slight rotation of polarization accumulates along the fiber length to a measurable value. The company says that the fiber's unique polarization properties make fiber Bragg gratings polarization-insensitive, despite the birefringence induced during the grating inscription process.
